Previous Guest Turners
Michael Hosaluk was our guest on May 4th, 5th, and 6th
Michael Hosaluk will be our guest for an all day demo on Saturday,
May 5th at Woodwerks Supply in Gahanna.
He will also provide hands on instruction on Friday, May 4th and on Sunday,
May 6th from 9:00am to 4:00pm in Barbara Crockett's Shop.
Michael Hosaluk, craftsman, artist, designer and educator, lives outside Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan, with his wife Marilyn and four children. Michael is internationally
recognized as one of the worlds most creative "turners" which is demonstrated
by the great demand for his teaching skills and for his work to be included in
exhibitions. He has lectured and demonstrated extensively throughout Canada, the
United States, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, and France.
His works have been exhibited in Canada, Australia, Taiwan, France, Germany,
China, Japan, and the United States. The Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, The
Woodturning Center in Philadelphia and the Saskatchewan Arts Board in Regina are
among the collectors who have included his work in their permanent collections.
Michael is comfortable using any media that serves his purpose. His work covers a wide
range of objects and materials ranging from functional vessels and furniture through
to entirely sculptural pieces. He is constantly challenging the limits of
interpretation in the field of woodturning. As a result, his work displays a strong
command of material used to explore exciting ideas. He retains close ties with
traditional and at the same time breaks free of those ties to explore entirely new
directions. His work is humorous and elegant, possesses character and gesture, full
of references to architecture, nature and culture. Michael remains active in his
community, freely sharing with others what he has learned, and is committed to creating
a greater awareness of crafts in Canada and throughout the world.

Mark Sfirri was our guest on December 2nd

Mark Sfirri will be conducting a woodturning demonstration on December 2nd from
9:00am to 4:00pm at Wood Werks Supply, Inc. located at 1181 Claycraft Road;
Columbus, Ohio (east side of town). The cost for this all-day session is $25 for
members of the Central Ohio Woodturners and $35 for non-members. Spouses of COW
members (and students) can attend for $15. Lunch (pizza) is included in the price.

Mark Sfirri, from near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, will be doing a workshop
that centers around his specialty, multi-axis turning. You may be familiar
with his humorous baseball bat series called "Rejects from the Bat Factory",
or his candlesticks on two axes.
All of his demonstrations will be between-center or spindle turning. He will
start with basic safe turning techniques and work his way into multi-axis
work with a traditional 1700 pad-foot leg and then into some of this
signature work. If you would like to see some of his work, on the Internet
"Google" Sfirri; there is lots to see. Also go to IronwoodGallery.com; there
are many examples there as well. You may have had the opportunity to see
Jean-François Escoulen's demonstrations. Although they both do multi-axis
spindle turning, there work is very different. Mark will discuss the
differences and the advantages and disadvantages of each approach.
Mark Sfirri is a tenured professor in the Fine Woodworking program at
Bucks County Community College in Newtown, Pennsylvania, where he has taught for
25 years. He has lectured and demonstrated throughout the US, Canada, Ireland,
France, and England. His work is included in the permanent collections of 16
major museums, mostly in the US. He has collaborated with many turners and
artists in different craft media for over 20 years. He and Michael Hosaluk have
collaborated since 1992 and had several joint collaborative exhibitions titled
"The Mark and Mikey Show". He was also instrumental in the development of the
Emma Lake conferences in Canada that Mike spearheaded.
Mark is a very engaging demonstrator and has done a lot of experimental work
over the years. He is eager to share this information in his workships and demos.

Jimmy provided us with a turning demonstration on Tuesday June 13th at
OSU from 7:00pm to 10:00pm. There was no charge for this session. There
was no business meeting or show 'n tell. We had refreshments and a
short intermission.
Jimmy also taught two hands-on class sessions on June 14th and 15th.

AAW Events
AAW Symposium on June 21st-24th 2006
The American Association of Woodturners will be holding their annual
symposium in Louisville, Kentucky on June 21st through June 24th. As
part of the Symposium each year, AAW includes a "return to the community"
project. This year in Louisville, AAW will collect Christmas ornaments.
They will be delivered to Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville. Each
year the hospital collects ornaments and decorated trees and auctions them
or sells them outright to raise money. Last year they raised almost $400,000
to help the kids in need. All COW members (as well as members of all AAW local
chapters) are urged to turn as many Christmas ornaments as they can and either
bring them to the symposium or get them to one of the COW officers before they
leave for the symposium.
News from the 2005 AAW Symposium
The Central Ohio Woodturners has won both the "Technical"
and "Best of Show" awards for our entry in the
"Chapter Collaborative Challenge" at the 2005 American
Association of Woodturners Nineteenth Annual Symposium which was
held in Overland Park, Kansas on July 22-24, 2005. The wooden gear
clock has already been sold to a private collector. The proceeds were
divided equally between JR Beall (he did much of the design and CNC
work) and the Central Ohio Woodturners.
Below are three photos. The first one is of our completed wooden gear
clock. The other ones are of the plaques that we received. These
plaques are currently on display at Woodwerks in Gahanna.
